How to raise kids to be successful in a non-religious, yet spiritual way? Deepak Chopra argues that there are seven spiritual laws for raising children that can ensure their success. He emphasizes that success is defined by who you are, not what you do.
Success is not merely measured by material achievements alone. Chopra mentions that real success is being able to feel love and compassion, feel joy and spread that joy to others, understand the meaning and purpose of life and feel a connection with the source of all life.
First Law: Everything is Possible
Parents should let their children know that everything is possible. Since the field where everything is possible is spirit, the child understands that meditation is one way to enter the field of pure potentiality. Chopra suggests that the adults in the family get together on Sunday to practice meditation. However, children under the age of 6, should not be forced to sit still, as it curbs their natural energy.
Another practice where children can learn to understand that "everything is possible", is to take time to go to outdoors and admire nature’s beauty. Also, when adults look at familiar things in new ways, it opens children to a lot of possibilities.
Second Law : If You Want to Get Something, Give it
Giving and receiving are keys to the movement of resources. Since one cannot exist without the other, understanding this law means that giving graciously is an important requirement of experiencing abundance.
An activity that emphasizes this law is to make it a practice for the family to give something to each other. What is exchanged could be as simple as a smile, help with a chore or a word of encouragement.
Third Law: When you Make a Choice, you Change the Future
Children understand from their parents that life is full of choices and talking about these choices helps understand them better. Just as, the present is the result of choices of the past, the future is determined by the choices we make today. Chopra suggests helping kids understand choices by helping them feel their way around it. Right and wrong can be interpreted in terms of how they feel.
If parents live in accordance with the spiritual laws, then it is easy to understand success and how to lead a life where success is not determined by luck alone. If parents live by the spiritual laws, then children are encouraged to lead a life guided by the spiritual laws as well.
