The Mayan calender does not go beyond December 21, 2012, but does that mean that the earth is going to be destroyed on that day? Not necessarily. The Mayans do not predict a world annihilation. Mayan prophecies mention transformation, purification and the beginning of a new cycle in 2012.
Why is the End of Mayan Calender Considered Doomsday?
The Mayans were an ancient, advanced society, who thrived between 200 B.C.E and 900 C.E., in Central America and with highly developed language, writing, architecture, astronomy.
The current interpretation of the Mayan calender indicates that the year 2012 will be the end of the present age. The Mayans were extremely accurate about astronomy – for example, the Mayans' calculations of the length of the planetary orbits, exact length of the solar year, arrangement of the galaxy and many other intricate details about the universe were accurate, without the use of telescopes or complex measuring devices. This accuracy gives the Mayans credibility in many people's minds.
Astronomical and Scientific Significance of December 21 2012
John Major Jenkins, Mayan researcher and author, believes that the Mayans created their calender to end on December 21, 2012 to match the unique alignment where the solstice sun will be at the center of the galaxy.
The solar system, comprising the sun and the nine planets have been traveling along the path of the milky way galaxy's equator. On December 12, 2012, the sun will be aligned at the center of the milky way galaxy. This alignment of the sun eclipses the galactic center. The unique positioning also interrupts the energy flow from the galactic center to the earth.
Other factors that may exacerbate the earth changes are recent scientific findings about the weakening of the earth's magnetic field. The magnetic field weakening is a cyclic process that eventually causes the magnetic pole shift. A weak magnetic field around the earth allows more of the sun's energy to effect changes on earth.
How to Prepare for the Earth Changes of 2012?
According to the Mayans, changes of astronomical magnitude do not happen in a day. All cycles go through a period of purification that may last about 20 years, which means that the earth is already in the purification phase, in preparation of the transformation and the dawn of the next age. Extreme weather changes, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, changes in world leadership, wars, changes in economic climate are some symptoms of the process of transformation.
Scientists, historians, metaphysicians and new agers agree that December 21 2012 is an important date, but do not consider it the doomsday. However, one cannot ignore the signs, that indicate the need for humans, to take better care of themselves and the planet.
